Adventurous Classmates

So when was the last time you went to school with a licensed falconer as a classmate? You can at Unity College. Andrew Fleming ’08, wildlife biology major, took up the sport of falconry as a teenager in North Carolina. Belle, his two-and-a-half pound red-tailed hawk, was a constant companion. As he thought about going to college, Andrew wanted a place that would understand his passion for falconry. Of course, Unity College, with its emphasis on all things environmental, became a good choice for Andrew.

Or maybe you’re real lifesavers, like James Lyon ’06, conservation law enforcement, and Emily Volz ’06, environmental education. James administered first aid to a young man found after hours at Kent Falls State Park (CT) and transported him to the hospital. Emily rescued a man from drowning at a swimming pool in Waterville (ME). Both Unity grads received citations for their lifesaving work.

Then there’s Seth Dunn ’05, who was recognized for his efforts on the Waldo County Hazard Mitigation Plan project, which he took on as an intern through the Waldo County Emergency Management Agency (EMA) in Maine. As the student project coordinator, Seth collaborated with Unity Associate Professor Sari Hou and used GIS technology to develop municipal land use maps that illustrate the hazard vulnerabilities of municipalities.

Go Wild
At Unity, you and your classmates can be anywhere, doing just about anything. You’ll get your hands dirty and your feet wet. You’ll learn the theory and apply it in practice. That includes studying water quality at Unity Pond, researching the impact of invasive purple loosestrife on native cattail, learning law enforcement and crime scene investigation techniques to protect users of parks and wilderness areas, writing grants to support environmental policy development, creating nature-focused artwork, or writing newspaper and magazine articles about your passion for mountains, mollusks, or microbes.

Full Spectrum Fun
Conservationist. Preservationist. Ecologist. Biologist. Journalist. Outdoor enthusiast. At Unity, you can explore many possible paths on a broad spectrum, jump into active and earthy adventures, collaborate with professors and peers, get involved in all aspects of outdoor life—and grow.

Except for sleeping under the stars, what could possibly be better than that?!?
