More Community Connections
Community is a part of us and all around us at Unity. Our classrooms reach beyond campus boundaries to become those spaces and places where the need is authentic, the work is original, and the impacts are real. Our classrooms become the bogs, lakes, streams, woodlands and wetlands in and around the region. They are the halls of government, the local town meetings, and the grassroots action groups working to better the places we call home.
Here at Unity, we are committed to working on environmental and community-wide issues that residents and leaders alike are taking on as active and engaged citizens. To that end, our campus community is involved in a number of local environmental initiatives that both complement and enrich our course-based environmental service activities. Local Food Guide
Unity is fortunate to be situated in an agricultural mecca. With the Maine Organic Farmers and Gardeners Association (MOFGA) up the road from campus and the Unity Farmers’ Market just down the hill, the community’s penchant for locally raised produce, meats and value-added foods is palpable. In an effort to share with folks the full range of options for “buying local”, the college and MOFGA have teamed up to create a free local food guide. The most recent edition, The Waldo County Area Local Food Guide (pdf) , includes farm and food business information for all towns in Waldo County, as well as neighboring communities in Kennebec, Somerset, and Penobscot counties. The guide is produced at no cost to the farms and food businesses who choose to be listed, and is made available free to the public.
If you are committed to buying local, or just beginning to learn about the home grown products available in the region, check out the guide. Then, read on, eat up, and support your local farmers!
