Semester Schedule

Wilderness First Responder Course (Aug 27-Sept 4)
Students will begin their Outward Bound Semester with their Wilderness First Responder Training and certification with SOLO. Housing and meals will be provided at the Outward Bound Newry base.

Sailing (Sept 7-17)
We will depart Unity on Sept 6th to begin your 10-day expedition on pulling boats (sailing) where you will be exploring the waters and islands in Penobscot or Muscongous Bays. You will discuss engaging topics such as coastal ecology, learn a bit about coastal navigation, and practice conflict resolution and group communication techniques.

Canoeing/Backpacking (Sept 19- 29)
You will find yourself canoeing and backpacking during the next 10 day phase. You will have the chance to hone your camping and travel skills and have opportunities to teach short outdoor skill classes. After the first few days you will be working in leadership teams of 2-3 students where you will gain experience making decisions, managing the group, and planning the daily route. By the end of this section you will have experience cooking nutritious meals in both in small groups of 3-4 people and in large groups of 10-12 people.

Service Project at Camp Susan Curtis (Sept 30-Oct 3)

Rocks/Whitewater (Oct 6- 14)
After resting up on a well-deserved day off, you will pick up new gear and food and head out for whitewater canoeing or rock climbing. This 9 day phase focuses on intensive technical instruction. Course areas for the canoeing will be in Maine’s North Woods and will depend on water flow and dam release schedules. Rock climbing will take place in Cathedral and White Horse Ledges in New Hampshire. Both groups will be based out of one or two campsites for the duration of this section.

Alpine (Oct 19- 26)

Final (Oct 29- Nov 4)
The student final is your chance to show what you have learned. You will work with your group at the Newry base to plan and execute all aspects of your final 5-6 day expedition. This includes all food planning, course area selection, route selection, evacuation plans, transportation arrangements, and the accompanying documentation. Your instructors will assist you throughout the planning phase and be trailing you out of sight during the actual expedition – ready to render assistance in any emergency situation.
