Ecology
CENTER for BIODIVERSITYBog Plant ID

Ecology majors are keen observers. They see connections everywhere and all the time—between plants and animals, animals and humans, humans and plants. They see the earth as a collection of integrated systems. They mull over big questions about the causes of natural disasters and are not daunted by the enormity of diversity on this planet.

Ecologists have a mind for Biology and an interest educating the public. They care about understanding and controlling threats to the environment. They are advocates for change that sustains the planet. They want to learn all they can about how earth’s inhabitants and habitation interact.

Is this you?RemsburgBiologyLab
Do you actually like reading science journals? Is rainforest conservation important to you? Could you study predator-prey interactions for hours an end? Do you wonder about the affects of pollution on tree growth? Is global warming a hot topic for you? Would you like to help control invasive species of plants to save lakes and lake life?

If yes, an Ecology major is for you.

What you’ll studyLoosestrife Field Study
In addition to core biology, math and chemistry courses, your studies will also include:

  • Conservation Biology
  • Ecology of Natural Communities
  • Ecosystems and Evolutionary Ecology
  • Marine Biology

What you’ll do
Your projects may include:Students in Quimby Library

  • Analyzing existing data sets from long-term research sites such as Hubbard Brook Forest (NH)
  • Mimicking predator foraging appendages using plastic utensils
  • Modeling sediment flow from wildflower grasslands
  • Recreating the effects of chromium contamination of sediments on plant growth

Who will teach you

-Kevin Spigel
Assistant Professor

 -Erika Latty
Assistant Professor

I try to engage students by framing scientific concepts within an environmental context.

Amy Arnett
Associate Professor of Biology

My teaching is about working with students as individuals that bring their own experiencesand knowledge to the classroom.

Where your Major can take you
