Eligibility for Academic Support Services

Unity College offers services to assist eligible students who need additional academic support or accommodations. Students who have a formally diagnosed disability should fill out a Request for Academic Support Services (pdf) as soon as notification of acceptance is received. During an initial consultation with the Learning Specialist, a student’s eligibility for services is determined.

In order to assess a student’s eligibility for accommodations we must receive the entire test documents:

• Psycho-educational assessment, or Individualized IQ test (ex. Wechsler Adult Intelligence Scale), and/or an

• Achievement test (ex. Woodcock-Johnson)

• For students with AD/HD or another disability or impairment, a signed statement from a physician detailing the impairment, the evaluation procedure, and the accommodations recommended

These tests must have been taken within the last 3 years (5 years for a transfer student).
These tests should contain a summary of results and recommendations. The summary usually consists of a psycho-educational evaluation and is written by a licensed psychologist, neurologist or learning disabilities specialist. This documentation contains information about the student’s academic potential as well as the student’s current academic performance (i.e.: level of reading, writing, math, etc) and recommendations for specific academic accommodations.

Please note that a student’s high school Individualized Education Plan (IEP), although very helpful information in the documentation process, is not sufficient for determining eligibility for services in college. Eligibility is based on current test documents that display results and recommendations for specific accommodations. The student’s most current IEP or 504 plan should be included with documents to assist in determining appropriate accommodations.
Unity College is able to offer eligible students needed accommodations such as assistive technology, exams taken in the LRC, extended time on exams, classroom note-taking assistance, or individual or small group tutoring in the LRC.
