SAGE

What is the Student Academic Growth Experience (SAGE)?
SAGE is a mentoring program that offers first-semester students regular contact with a knowledgeable, caring faculty member who also serves as the student’s initial academic advisor.  SAGE carries a separate fee.

How does SAGE work?
Students in the SAGE program are assigned to the section of The Unity Experience, the orientation course required of all entering students, taught by their SAGE mentor.  The mentor will invite each SAGE student to a private meeting in which they will informally assess the student’s academic strengths and challenges, confidence and adjustment to college life.

Mentors will schedule weekly meetings with their SAGE students during the first month or so of the fall semester to advise them about study skills that contribute to academic success, goal setting and campus resources.  They will refer students to the college peer tutors, learning specialist or psychological counselor as appropriate.

For the remainder of the fall semester, students will be encouraged to stay in regular contact with their SAGE mentor using email, office visits, or simply by checking in for a few minutes before or after class. The college assumes that all students, including those in the SAGE program, intend to be responsible about meeting their academic obligations.  This means being conscientious and disciplined about attending class and appointments, completing academic work on time and seeking support when necessary.

What does SAGE not do?
SAGE mentors do not serve as a replacement for parental supervision over academic efforts.  With proper authorization from the student, mentors may respond to occasional email or phone messages from parents, but their primary relationship is with the student, not their parents.
