Backpacking on the Appalachian Trail
100 Mile Wilderness

Prior Experience Required: No
Exertion Level: Moderate

Explore the famed 100-Mile Wilderness—the longest stretch of uninterrupted wilderness on the entire Appalachian Trail!  Old-growth forests, mature forest stands and a high concentration of rare plants and animals make this section of trail a nature-lover’s dream.

Two Nova groups will embark on this spectacular 28 mile journey—one headed northbound from South Nahmakanta Lake; the other headed south from Abol Bridge.  The meeting of the groups midway is a much-loved Unity tradition.  You will travel through relatively gentle terrain as you encounter pristine lakes and rivers—all with the scenic backdrop of Katahdin, Maine’s highest peak.  The route will cover moderate terrain making this trip an excellent choice for the novice backpacker—though certainly a treat for experienced backpackers as well!

Students will have the opportunity to engage in a service project to help preserve this pristine area.

Dates Offered:
August 10th – August 15th
August 17th – August 22nd - *Reserved for students traveling from outside of New England
(New England states include Maine, New Hampshire, Vermont, Massachusetts, Rhode Island and Connecticut)
