Hiking in Baxter State Park – Katahdin (Basecamp) Prior Experience Required: No, but hiking experience is helpful Baxter State Park is home to Katahdin—the northern terminus of the Appalachian Trail and, at 5,267 feet, Maine’s highest peak. It is an exhilarating journey to the top and only one of numerous trails and peaks you will have a chance to explore during this trip. Baxter State Park exemplifies the rugged mountains and panoramic vistas of Maine. Since this trip has significant elevation gain and travels across challenging terrain we recommend that participants have hiking experience—though newcomers in good physical condition are encouraged to take part. Participants will also spend time learning about park issues and management and get the opportunity to participate in a service project.
