Unity Is...a terrific place!

We can’t wait to meet you on campus and share it with you in person. But until you visit, chew on these ideas and let your juices flow. Here’s what Unity is. . .

Environmental Leadership
Our academic programs are totally focused on the environment—which offers you a distinctive opportunity to live your passion and make a difference in others’ lives and in the natural world. In the process, you’ll develop your leadership abilities in the classroom and in the field. Our supportive community dedicates itself to getting you into collaborative, sustainable outdoor experiences and encouraging your active personal and professional growth.

Outdoors
Your classrooms are the lakes, mountains, forests, rivers, parks, bogs, and barrens of rural Maine and other sites across the United States and around the world. Prepare to get your hands dirty, your feet wet, and your mind opened. Oh, yeah. . .we do use a few great spots that still have four walls, a floor, a roof, a few windows (yes!), a bit of heat, and some outstanding lab equipment.

Experiential
At Unity, you learn by doing. In the classroom, in the field, in the lab, on the mountain, in the forest, on the lake—your active, collaborative experiences balance theory and practice. You not only understand the basics; you know how to put them to use and expand the possibilities of
your profession.

Friendly
Your strong connection to the natural world makes you a welcome part of our community. We’re a small bunch (a few more than 500 hardy souls) who know your name and want to get to know more about you. Our faculty and staff are so approachable, you’ll see them in their flannels, cords, and boots at the same places you and your friends hang out. Our diverse student body embraces the full spectrum from conservation to preservation and everything in between. Because we all love the environment, we’re a friendly and accepting group, and we encourage you to be who you are. You’ll like it here!

Partnerships
Unity’s partners matter. They contribute to our philosophy of experiential education by providing real-world opportunities for you to expand your perspectives. Whether you choose an Outward Bound adventure, a collaboration with the Maine Organic Farmers and Gardeners Association (MOFGA) or the Unity Barn Raisers, the Husson University Masters program, a semester at The Washington Center in our nation’s Capitol, or any of several other options, you broaden your capacity to mix theory and practice. That makes you a valuable contributor to the environment and
the world.

Mission
As a small, private college in rural Maine, Unity College provides dedicated, engaged students with a liberal arts education that emphasizes the environment and natural resources. Our graduates are prepared to become environmental stewards, effective leaders, and responsible citizens through active learning experiences within a supportive community.

History
From its 1965 beginnings on the 185 acres of a former farm and chicken hatchery near Unity, Maine, the Unity Institute of Liberal Arts and Sciences has grown into Unity College, an environmentally focused, independent, coeducational, private liberal arts college serving more than 500 students. Now encompassing 240+ acres overlooking Unity Pond—and the millions of acres in the state of Maine, Unity College offers more major programs and graduates more students in the environmental and natural resource disciplines than any other college in the United States.
