Internships

Rory DwyerWhat is an internship?
"An internship is any carefully monitored work or service experience in which an individual has intentional learning goals and reflects actively on what he or she is learning throughout the experience."             -The National Society for Experiential Education, 2010

Unity College students have engaged in meaningful credit-bearing work experiences for over 45 years. The program has grown into a formalized and integral part of Unity College’s experiential academic curriculum. Internships provide the opportunity for students to explore, clarify, affirm and reflect on career choices. Although not academically required by all majors; internships are one of five options that all students may complete to fulfill a Unity Stewardship Curriculum requirement. The distinguishing academic components of a Unity College internship are the development of deliberate learning goals and structured reflection and the focus on career development. Interns receive ongoing support and feedback from both a Faculty Sponsors and a Worksite Supervisor.

Program Goals
The Unity College Internship Program is designed to…

  • Develop skills, confidence and professional contacts which cannot be achieved in a classroom setting.
  • Perform work in a short-term capacity enabling the students to identify their strengths, areas of growth, and specific areas of interest.
  • Facilitate personal reflections on work experiences through the development of an internship portfolio and worksite supervisor evaluation.
  • Integrate classroom theory with professional learning experiences.

Unity students are selected for competitive internships across the country and abroad.  Students have traveled to exciting job locations in more than 40 states and internationally in countries including Costa Rica, Thailand, Belize, Ghana, and Chile.

Credit bearing internships typically take place off-campus with a private businesses, nonprofit organization or government agency. The student may or may not receive monetary compensation depending on the arrangements made with the host organization.
