    Black pine's internship program offers college students the unparalleled opportunity to learn about exotic animal care in a hands-on environment with tigers, lions, chimpanzees and other primates, reptiles and more.  While learning the realities of running a sanctuary, students will gain invaluable experience in many aspects of animal husbandry, business administration, and communications.

    Animal Care internships are available in any and all areas, including domestic (cows, horses, goats, ducks) and wild (mountain lions, bears, river otters, wolverines, reindeer, wolves) animals.  "Internship opportunities are incredibly flexible.  Our staff will work with you to create the perfect format and schedule.  We will help you to create a learning experience that will meet your specific needs and interests.  Great Plains Zoo and Delbridge Museum of Natural History-Sioux Falls, SD

Stone Zoo-Stoneham, MA

    This opportunity allows interns to work behind the scenes with the animal management department to help provide for the health, safety, care and enrichment of Zoo New England's diverse animal collection. Keeper Aides assist with preparing diets, feeding animals, cleaning holding areas and recording observations. NOTE: This position involves physically demanding "dirty" work and does not involve hands-on work with animals.

Riverbanks Zoo and Garden-Columbia, SC

    Interns at Riverbanks Zoo spend their time cleaning exhibits, feeding animals and talking to the public.  The level of supervision depends on the intern's previous work experience and the job being performed. Interns can expect to get dirty, lift heavy objects (most zoos and rehab facilities state the ability to lift 50 pounds as a requirement), operate in inclement weather, and field extensive questions from the public.  Housing is available in the surrounding area for ~300/month.

 Saint Louis Zoo- Saint Louis, MO

   Interns are required to serve a minimum of 20 hours per week for a minimum of six weeks.  Interns can be employed on a part-time basis by the zoo during their internship; however, they cannot intern and work in the same area.  This would allow the student a source of income during the internship, a crucial factor in whether or not the student can afford to find housing/transportation in/to MO.

Southwick Zoo- Mendon, MA

    As a summer intern in a very busy non-profit organization, you will be asked to wear a lot of different hats- for example, you may be asked to clean cages, show animals to visitors, direct visitors throughout the zoo, enter data into zoo computers, draft documents for zoo use, or observe animals for zoo personnel.  Thus, the kind of person who will gain the most from his or her internship is someone who is flexible, dependable, responsible, self-motivated, and has a good sense of humor.  A part of intern responsibilities will be helping the EARTH staff care for animals in the education building, setting up shows, answering visitor questions about the animals and the zoo, and perhaps even giving education demonstrations yourself.  A project is a requirement of the zoo internship, and the same project can be used for the Unity Requirements, so long as the school approves of the research being done.

Greenville Zoo- Greenville, SC

    The Greenville Zoo Intern program is intended to give students the opportunity to have a comprehensive, hands-on working experience in the zoo profession within the animal care department.  This internship program offers interns the opportunity to learn about the operations of a modern zoo, animal care, and to obtain some basic entry-level experience.  Mostly interns will assist the Greenville Zoo Keepers with daily routines and animal husbandry but may work in other areas of the zoo if needed.  The internships will e for the college term, semester or quarter, and will also be available for the summer months.

Houston Zoo-Houston, Texas

    The Houston Zoo provides unpaid internship opportunities for students who wish to obtain hands-on experience in a functional area of the Zoo.  Internships are available in most animal sections, as well as horticulture, education, marketing, data management, engineering, conservation and other areas as needed.

Philadelphia Zoo-Philadelphia, PA

    The zoo offers internships in animal care and education. As an animal care intern you will work in the children's zoo, working side-by-side with keepers there, monitoring and caring for the animals in that area. The education ambassador internship allows interns to work one-on-one with educational animals, talk in formal presentations and one-on-one settings.  To apply for this internship, please submit a letter of interest stating which internship you are applying for and why, a detailed resume, a reference letter or letters of recommendation and a copy of your college transcript.

Connecticut's Beardsley Zoo-Bridgeport, CT  

    Interns assist our staff while learning valuable life lessons about their possible career choices. Internships are available in animal care, vet tech, education, horticulture and administration. While there is no stipend, students may work for credit. Prospective interns must be at least 18 years of age and be at least a second semester senior in high school, a college undergraduate, or graduate student, or within one year after graduation. Franklin Park Zoo-Stoneham, MA

    Volunteer positions at the Franklin Park Zoo include Zoo Ambassador, Keeper Aide, Gardener, and Interpreter. Interpreters spend their time talking to the public, explaining activities, giving facts about the exhibits, and engaging with the public at interactive stations. Keeper Aides help prepare diets, clean habitats, feeding animals and observing.  There is no hands-on animal work involved, although there is plenty of 'dirty work' to go around.

    The Internship Program at Lincoln Park Zoo provides an opportunity to apply academic knowledge and skills to hands-on experience. Participation in an internship program fosters skills in public speaking, communication, research, negotiations, problem-solving and critical thinking. Interns observe and assist staff in the zoo’s daily operation, gradually assuming more responsibility and achieving entry-level competency by the end of the internship.

Toledo Zoo-Toledo, OH

    Although the Toledo Zoo has many opportunities for internships, only one of them is full-time.  This is the animal behavior internship, which involves investigating animal behavior, observation reporting, spreadsheet work-ups and data analysis, and investigating ways to use the research for behavior modification or other goals. Work is usually done from 8-5, Mon.-Fri.

Pittsburgh Zoo & PPG Aquarium-Pittsburgh, PA

    Program participants (interns) will experience hands-on and/or project work in one or more of the following animal departments: Aquarium, Elephant/Ungulate, Tropical Forest (Primates), Worlds of Discovery (reptiles and amphibians), Asian Forest (leopards, tiger, waterfowl), African Savanna (lion, rhino, cheetah), Kids' Kingdom (deer, sea lion, domestic animals), Animal Holding/Quarantine. Duties Include; observation of animals, daily report sheet, feeding/watering, cleaning enclosures, grooming of domestic animals, work in training programs, assist in veterinary procedures, collect specimens, interact with the public, answer questions, narrate demonstrations, and other duties, as assigned.

Roger Williams Park Zoo-Providence, RI

    The zoo offers internships in the education department, interns will discuss topics from animals to conservation with guests and programs, working under the Curator of Education. Internships are also available 'zoo-wide', introducing interns to the range of jobs and vocations involved in the day-to-day running of the zoo.

Northwoods Wildlife Center-Minocqua, Wisconsin

    Interns will be involved in all phases of wildlife rehabilitation, including emergency care, daily feeding and cleaning, rehabilitation, and releases.  This includes care of non-releasable animals kept at the center for educational purposes. Interns will also work with visitors who wish to tour the center, and may assist in educational programs. Interns may help in the development of further educational opportunities for the public. Internship is approximately 60% animal care and 40% education. Center for Wildlife- Cape Neddick, ME

    The Center treats 1600 animals each year (and over 150 separate species) of wild birds, small mammals and reptiles and is one of the largest rehabilitator in New England. CFW's rehab facility staff provide a unique learning and volunteer service experience to over 50 volunteers and 10 college interns. Our education team travels to schools, libraries and other venues in southern Maine and New Hampshire, offering environmental education programs featuring live animals to over 4,000 individuals annually.

Florida Keys Wild Bird Rehabilitation Center, Inc.-Tevernier, FL

    This is a native and migratory neo-tropical wild bird rehabilitation and environmental education center located on 5 acres of hammock and wetlands on Florida Bay in the Upper Florida Keys.  Programs focus on the rehabilitation of sick, injured, and orphaned wild birds and education of the public about these birds and the hazards that confront them in the unique and delicate Keys environment.  There is an extensive exhibit of passerines, raptor, wading and water birds in natural settings.  Interns will gain experience in many aspects of bird rehabilitation including: emergency care and medical procedures, rehabilitation, nutrition, raising orphaned birds, care of non-releasable birds, diagnostic lab work and public education.

Genesis Wildlife Sanctuary-Beech Mountain, NC

    Learn wildlife rescue, in field chemical capture, anesthesia, how to work alongside a vet, diet and habitat maintenance, raptor handling, and help run educational programs.  A small center, Genesis Wildlife Sanctuary takes in about 500 animals a year, but has fewer staff than the bigger centers.  Interns can expect to be busy the full 40 hrs/wk.  Housing is available in the clinic, and a stipend is provided.

Wildlife Rehabilitation at the NC Zoo-Asheboro, NC

    Interns provide routine daily care for injured and orphaned native wildlife until ready for release, as well as care for the Zoo's education animals.  Interns will have the opportunity to assist with medical tasks such as administering medications, physical therapy, assisting with radiographs and surgeries and perform treatments as ordered by veterinary staff.  In addition, interns may have the opportunity to participate in special projects, research, tours, training, cage building and animal rescues, as well as participating in our education animal programming.

 PAWS Wildlife Center- Lynwood, WA (outside Seattle)

    Interns gain valuable practical experience, while helping PAWS' wildlife patients and working with professional staff and highly trained volunteers. Some of the skills learned include individual species identification and natural history, proper husbandry and enrichment techniques, animal handling, tube-feeding of mammals and birds, medication administration, lab work, and various other procedures. Interns will receive daily one-on-one training and are required to attend an orientation and two in-depth training classes. Interns will also have the opportunity to work on an individual or group project.

Pelican Harbor Seabird Station, Inc.-Miami, FL

    PHSS is an internationally recognized station for seabird rehabilitation, receiving thousands of birds each year. The majority of injuries seen are a result of fishing tackle, but illness, poisoning and electrocution also present. There is a large educational outreach component involved at PHSS, and interns will have the ability to help with some programming. Most of the intern duties will involve cleaning habitats, preparing food, and helping with medical procedures. Occasionally a necropsy will present itself, and interns are allowed to observe.

The Raptor Center-St. Paul Minnesota (At the University of Minnesota)

    An Environmental Education Internship. The intern is responsible for assisting with the care and management of the Raptor Center's 30 education birds of prey. This position includes providing tours of The Raptor Center's facilities to the public, providing support for on-site presentations, outreach programs, and The Raptor Center's 3-week summer camp experience. Daily duties include greeting and speaking with the public, and providing educational programs and tours. This position reports to the raptor program manager and works as part of the raptor education team. The weekly time commitment is 35-40 hours per week.
