The Environmental Citizen Course

Real-World, Real-Time Research
and the Future of China Lake Outlet Stream

"We want to spread the knowledge we have gained. Our mission is to bring new awareness that Outlet Stream can be an outstanding place to live, work, and visit."
-Students from the Environmental Citizen Course

Yes, it's true, our students live their passion for the environment and it shows. In the Environmental Citizen course, Unity students and professor, Chris Beach, took the initiative to expand their academic studies into outreach projects for the local community by conducting real-world, real-time research on the future of the China Lake Outlet Stream.

With a commitment to producing high quality research, this dedicated group of sixteen students representing a variety of environmental majors presented their findings at a public meeting to the townspeople in nearby Vassalboro and to the local press.

The primary purpose of this course teaches students how to become environmental stewards by choosing a topic, researching it, and then reaching out with the information. During the semester long course, Unity students collaborated with knowledgeable local people as well as with experts in the field.
