The Great Backyard Bird Count

The GBBC is an event that occurs all over the country and involves numerous people, including many students, staff and faculty on this campus. For one whole weekend in February (Friday to Monday), volunteers choose a spot on or around campus to observe the birds in their area.

The GBBC is a mid-winter census of birds before winter bird distributions dissolve into spring migration. It is done in cooperation with Audubon and the Cornell Lab of Ornithology. Participants count birds for as little or as long as they want and then fill out an online checklist with their results. These results help scientists to determine things like how diseases among birds affect the populations, how the weather influences bird populations, and how the timing of migrations vary from year to year.
