Ecological Imagination Explored in Presentation by Dr. Steven Fesmire on January 24

Unity, Maine -- January, 2007 –  Unity College announces a presentation on Ecological Imagination by environmental philosopher Dr. Steven Fesmire at 6 p.m. on January 24 at the Unity Centre for the Performing Arts, 42 Depot Street (off Route 202) in Unity, Maine.  The presentation is free and open to the general public.  It is the first presentation of the Lapping Lecture Series, a new lecture series at the Unity Centre for the Performing Arts sponsored by Unity College.  The series is named in honor of Dr. Mark Lapping, former Interim President of Unity College and distinguished Professor at the University of Southern Maine.

     Fesmire will explore the links between human creativity and nature, with emphasis on food systems in history to the modern world.  He serves as an Associate Professor of Philosophy and Chair of the Environmental Studies Program at Green Mountain College in Poultney, Vermont. 

     His wide-ranging philosophical interests include environmental and animal ethics, slow food, and Jazz improvisation as a metaphor for social intelligence.  His recent book John Dewey and Moral Imagination focuses on pragmatic approaches to living a coherent and moral life.
