A feast for eyes, minds and stomachs — Sportsmen’s Conference and Wild Game Dinner

UNITY (April 8): Unity College will host its first Sportsmen’s Conference and Wild Game Dinner, 4-10 p.m. Thursday, April 19, at the Unity Centre for the Performing Arts on Depot Street.

The program of events includes an exotic game dinner 5–7 p.m., with traditional and exotic meats, including beaver, bear, moose and deer.

In addition, attendees can feast their eyes on a show by eight award-winning Maine artists whose creations range from paintings to taxidermy.

Participants include Unity College alum Mark Dufresne of Nature’s Reflections Taxidermy (dufresnetaxidermy.com); award-winning Maine-based taxidermist Larry Tucker of Tuck’s Taxidermy; award-winning Maine master bird taxidermist Tom Berube of Tom’s Avian Taxidermy (tomsavian.com); wildlife artists Patti Carter and David Footer (davidfooter.com); fish carver Gene Bahr (genebahr.com); sculptors specializing in nature scenes in bronze — Maine-based artist Forest Hart foresthart.com) and David Smus; and wildlife bird carver Steve Brettell.

A cornerstone event of the conference will be the whitetail deer seminar 7-10 p.m. by photographer and outdoor writer, Charles J. Alsheimer. His topics will include whitetail behavior, the moon’s influence on whitetail deer, sign interpretation, hunting strategies, and quality deer management. Alsheimer will incorporate his award-winning photography into the presentation and end the seminar with a motivational discussion of the future of deer hunting, encouraging hunters to protect their sport for generations to come. Cost is $25 for those who opt for the VIP treatment, $20 for the seminar and fixings, and $12 for individuals, with student rates available. Proceeds will benefit Operation Game Thief, Catch-A-Dream and the Unity College Archery Club trip to its 2007 World 3D Championship.
