Unity College
Students to Hold Anti-Drug Fishing Event at Unity Pond on Saturday,
March 3
Unity, Maine –
February, 2007 – On Saturday,
March 3, from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Boat Launch on Unity Pond in
Unity, Maine, Unity College students from a leadership class will be
teaching ice fishing skills to youth ages 5 to 15. The skills taught
will include ice fishing techniques, safety, handling of fish, and fish
anatomy.
The event was conceived by Unity students as part of a class that
focuses on developing leadership skills to make a positive difference in
communities.
“There are many positive activities that young individuals can
pursue that are interesting, fun and engaging,” said Josh Beuth, a
first-year Wildlife Biology major from Richmond, Rhode Island. “This is
very much an anti-drug initiative where we are helping youth to become
involved in outdoor activities. When youth are involved in positive
activities they are far less susceptible to negative influences that can
lead them to make bad choices.”
Officials from the Maine Department of Inland Fisheries and
Wildlife along with members of the Unity College Conservation Law
Enforcement Club will be volunteering to help with the event. A Unity
area Game Warden will also be on hand to assist.
Events are free and open to the general public. Refreshments will
be available at a concession stand with proceeds to benefit the Unity
College Conservation Law Enforcement Club. For more information
