Chris Pinchbeck to
Exhibit Photographs at Leonard R. Craig Gallery
Unity, Maine –
February, 2007 – The Leonard R. Craig Gallery at Unity College will present an
exhibition of photographs by Chris Pinchbeck titled: “Pinholes”,
beginning on February 13.
The works on
display are landscapes produced with a unique pinhole camera. Pinchbeck
has converted a two-wheel enclosed utility trailer into a camera obscura
which can be towed behind a vehicle and parked to compose and capture
the image. The images have an incredible level of detail, yet also
record movement not regularly seen in traditional photography, as the
images are exposed on the paper for up to six hours. Each image is one
of a kind, as there is no negative involved in the process. These
pictures are currently the largest direct positive pinhole photographs
in existence.
“These photographs
capture the complex textures of the natural world, but also make
references to time and motion in a way that we do not expect from
photographs,” noted Associate Professor and Gallery Coordinator Ben
Potter. “They have a subtlety and presence akin to certain paintings or
drawings”
Pinchbeck works both
as a commercial and fine art photographer, and has exhibited widely in
New England, including the Center for Maine Contemporary Art and Boston
University. He teaches at the Maine Photographic Workshops/Rockport
College, The Academy of Art University in San Francisco and leads
photography workshops in British Columbia. He currently resides in
Hope, Maine.
The exhibition will
run from February 13th through April 6th. All are invited to the
opening reception on Tuesday February 13th from 4-6pm. Gallery Hours
are Mondays through Fridays, 10am to 6pm, and Saturdays, 1-5pm. The
gallery will be closed March 12th-24th.
