Why Hunting is Crucial for Conservation Topic of Presentation by Unity College President Mitchell Thomashow, January 31 at the Unity Centre for the Performing Arts

Unity, Maine -- January, 2007 –  Unity College announces a presentation on Why Hunting is Crucial for Conservation by Dr. Mitchell Thomashow, President of Unity College, at 6 p.m. on January 31 at the Unity Centre for the Performing Arts, 42 Depot Street (off Route 202) in Unity, Maine.  The presentation is free and open to the general public with the lobby open at 5:30 p.m..  Light refreshments will be served.

     Thomashow will address the great need for conservation-minded hunters and preservation-minded non-hunters to set aside their differences and renew their common commitment to wildlife and wildlife habitat.

     The presentation is part of the new Lapping Lecture Series at the Unity Centre for the Performing Arts sponsored by Unity College.  The series is named in honor of Dr. Mark Lapping, former Interim President of Unity College and distinguished Professor at the University of Southern Maine.

     Thomashow is recognized nationally for his speaking and writing on the importance of everyday awareness of ecological problems.  His book Ecological Identity has been described as “an ecological manifesto, a must read for anyone interested in changing the ways human beings exist in the world.”  His sequel Bringing the Biosphere Home earned praise as “the perfect primer for those concerned with the future of the natural world.”
