Waterville -- The woods were alive with the sounds of axes, chainsaws and a little Johnny Cash on Saturday during the Colby Woodsmen's Team Jack and Jill Meet.
Also known as the annual Mud Meet, the event was changed for the first time to require men and women on each team. "This is a new thing for us. We're excited to host it and hope to have more Jack & Jill meets in the future," said Kate Braemer, captain of the Colby team.
In all, close to 90 competitors from Colby, Unity College, University of Maine-Orono and Dartmouth College participated in 15 events throughout the day ranging from the pole climb, pulp toss and log rolling crosscut, bow saw and unverhand chop.
Hand-made awards were scheduled to be handed out at the end of the day with the biggest award being pride, said Braemer.
