Cake surges to fast win in successful Unity College event

 

UNITY (April 21): Judson Cake of Bar Harbor won his second Midcoast 5-kilometer road race this spring with a blistering time of 14 minutes and 48 seconds during Saturday's 25th annual Unity College 5K. Cake outdistanced the 80-participant field by nearly two minutes.

 

Cake also won the Tiger Season-Opener 5K in Rockland on April 5 as he crossed that 3.1-mile course in 15:40.

Unity College race coordinator Gary Zane said Saturday's weather was by far the best it had been for the race as temperatures were in the mid-60s at start time.

Tommy McWalters of Thorndike finished second in 16:32 and Allison Dorho of Skowhegan was the first female to cross the finish line. At age 10, Mike Tormey was the youngest runner.

In the oldest division, John Lemieux of Sangerville took first in the male 60-69 catergory, while Kathy Fogler of Exeter finished first for females in the same age bracket.

There were age winners in other divisions as well.

Unity College's first male finisher was Mike Desjardins of Unity and the school's first female was Stacy Morrison of Unity.

Linda Benn of Waterville was the first walker to cross the course.

The course started at the Unity College gymnasium, wound through the village of Unity and finished at the college entrance.

The race coincided with the college's Earth Day celebration.
