Earth Day Schedule of Events at Unity College on April 18 Unity, Maine – April, 2009 – A comprehensive series of events to commemorate Earth Day 2009 is will be held at Unity College on April 18 at the campus, 90 Quaker Hill Road, Unity. All events are open to the general public. The theme of the events for the day is “Celebrate Your Earth, Your Way.” The focus of the day is sustainability, “get up, get out,” and “natural resources in our life.” Among the events being planned at Unity College to commemorate Earth Day 2009 will begin on April 18 at 11 a.m. with an animal identification contest in Koons Hall. Participants will identify the mounted animals from the significant collection on permanent display in Koons Hall. Additional events for both Earth Day and the week surrounding Earth Day are being planned. From 12 noon to 1 p.m., there will be a chili cook off in the Student Activities Center. All styles of organic, meatless or traditional chili are welcome. Firearms safety demonstrations will take place beginning at 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. on the soccer field adjacent to the gym. The demonstrations will be conducted by former Colonel of the Maine State Warden’s Service and Assistant Professor Tim Peabody. Demonstration firearms will be on hand and participants will have opportunity to test their marksmanship skills with paintball guns. An adventure sports gear auction will be held throughout the day in the parking lot adjacent to the Student Activities Center. Completing the schedule for the day will be an interactive Earth Day 2009 commemorative t-shirt tie-dye location in the parking lot adjacent to the Student Activities Center. “Our goal with Earth Day 2009 at Unity College is to encourage participants to enjoy the environment, and recognize the many different types of nature oriented activities there are to enjoy,” noted William Knight ’11, a Conservation Law Enforcement major from Waterboro, Maine, who serves on the Earth Day planning committee. Earth Day and week activities at Unity College is being planned in part by students in the Environmental Citizen class of Associate Professor Tom Mullin. Unity College is a small private college in rural Maine that provides dedicated, engaged students with a liberal arts education which emphasizes the environment and natural resources. Unity College graduates are prepared to be environmental stewards, effective leaders, and responsible citizens through active learning experiences within a supportive community.
