Unity College Receives Two UCDA Design Awards Unity, Maine – August, 2009 – The University and College Designers Association (UCDA) has announced that the second issue of the Unity College Journal of Creative Sustainability, Hawk & Handsaw, will receive an Award of Excellence for design. A second Award of Excellence will be presented for the 2009 Unity College Catalog. Hawk & Handsaw was designed by Unity College Associate Director of Publications Susan Fedoush with input from an editorial staff of Unity College faculty, staff and student editor. The editorial staff includes journal founder and President of Unity College Mitchell Thomashow, Editor-in-Chief and Associate Professor of Environmental Writing Kathryn Miles, Art Editor and Associate Professor of Art Ben Potter, and Unity College Student Editor Jake Harr ’09. Fedoush led the design of the 2009 Unity College Catalog with input from campus constituencies such as the Office of Academic Affairs and Office of Admissions.
The awards will be displayed and presented at the 39th Annual UCDA Design Conference, which will take place from October 3-6 in Seattle, Washington. “We are so pleased to receive this recognition for the design of a new publication created with in-house talent at Unity College, and for the design of the Unity College catalog,” said Rob Constantine, Vice President for College Advancement. “Susan Fedoush and the Hawk & Handsaw editorial staff exemplify the commitment to excellence present at Unity College. The Unity College Catalog has long been an exceptional platform to express the full measure of the College and all that it offers.” In recent years Unity College embarked on a redesign of its entire suite of college publications to better reflect its strong connection to sustainability and national aspirations. This redesign effort was led by Director of Publications Susan Fedoush. Unity’s commitment to sustainability extended to use of 100% post recycled paper, supporting the local economy and reducing the carbon footprint associated with shipping by using primarily Maine-based printers that have been certified by the Forestry Stewardship Council. “Unity College is closely tied to sustainability as a core value that shapes its decisions and initiatives, from the way it buys its electricity to the design and messages present in its publications,” said Associate Director of College Communications Mark Tardif. “Susan Fedoush has engaged in a multi-year complete redesign and reframing of Unity College publications to accurately reflect its connection to sustainability. Obviously these two awards are confirmation of the success of her efforts and evidence of the top flight talent that is committed to advancing the environmental mission and national aspirations of Unity College.” The journal features writing, art, poetry, photography and sculpture from artists worldwide and is available online at www.unity.edu/EnvResources/LiteraryJournal/HawkHandsaw2009.aspx. The Unity College Catalog is available online at http://www.unity.edu/Academic/SupportServices/Registrar/UCCatalog.aspx UCDA was founded in 1970 as the first and only association in the United States for professionals involved in the creation of visual communications for educational institutions. Print entries were judged for excellence in concept, design, illustration, typography, and printing, as well as effectiveness, quality, and creativity in solving the problems inherent in institutional design. Unity College is a small private college in rural Maine that provides dedicated, engaged students with a liberal arts education which emphasizes the environment and natural resources. Unity College graduates are prepared to be environmental stewards, effective leaders, and responsible citizens through active learning experiences within a supportive community.
