Unity College Announces Lapping Lecture Series for Spring 2008

Unity College is pleased to announce the schedule of events for the Spring 2008 Lapping Lecture Series.  The series will be held at the Unity Centre for the Performing Arts in Unity.  With the exception of one date in the series, each event will be held Tuesday evening from 6 p.m. to 7 p.m.  The events are free and open to the general public. 
     

The Unity Centre for the Performing Arts is located at 42 Depot Street (off Route 202) in Unity, Maine.

January 22 – Beth Nagusky
GrowSmart Energy and Climate Change Director Beth Nagursky will address Climate Challenges and Future Energy Opportunities for Maine and the Northeast.

January 29 – Travis Wagner
University of Southern Maine Professor and former EPA “Green Guy” television personality Travis Wagner will discuss his unfolding career adventures in The Path Least Taken: Environmental Adventures of a 1983 Unity College Alumnus.

February 5 – Kate Braestrup
Chaplain of the Maine Warden Service and the author Kate Braestrup will describe her experiences with wilderness adventures gone awry with Blessing the Moose: Here If You Need Me.

February 12 – Tom Mullin
Appalachian Trail hiker and Unity College Professor Tom Mullin will compare his experience through-hiking the Appalachian Trail with challenges facing today’s wilderness hikers in Ultimate Challenge: the Past and Future of the Appalachian Trail.

February 19 – Ken Elowe
Hunter and Director of Resource Management for Maine’s Department of Inland Fisheries and Wildlife Ken Elowe will discuss the key challenges facing Maine’s hunting community and wildlife managers in Still a Place for Us: Protecting Maine’s Hunting Heritage in a Changing World.

February 26 – Curt Carter
Singer, outdoor educator and Executive Director of the Land for Learning Institute Curt Carter will entertain while demonstrating how to create new green understanding with The Power of Song from Campfire to Classroom: an environmental musical evening with Curt Carter.

March 4 – Unity Students Speak Out
Selected Environmental Challenge students explain their personal “environmental challenge campaigns” in Taking the Hot Seat: Unity Students on Campaign.

Note: There are no lectures during Spring Semester break.

March 25 – John Sullivan
Director of the Unity Centre for the Performing Arts John Sullivan, with the assistance of the first-year students in the Leadership class, will entertain and challenge the audience’s knowledge with Environmental Challenge: a green game show.

April 1 – Jamie Pastika
Zookeeper, wildlife photographer, former Disney World interpreter, and current Executive Director of Minnesota’s The Reptile and Amphibian Zoo, Jamie Pastika, will present live zoo specimens in Radical Reptile Adventures: We Bring the Zoo to You.

April 8 – Ann Cooper
Food Activist, author, former executive chef and current Director of Nutrition Services for Berkeley, California Unified School District Ann cooper will speak on Lunch Lessons: Changing the Way We Feed Our Children.

April 15 – Women’s Environmental Leadership Award – Martha Dolben
The Unity College Women’s Environmental Leadership (WE Lead) program will present its annual award honoring a woman whose career demonstrates outstanding environmental leadership.  This year’s award winner is educator, author and poet Martha Dolben, who will present Soiree Uganda: Building Bridges between Unity and Uganda.

April 23 (a Wednesday) – David Whalley
Mountaineering photographer and former award-winning RAF Mountain Rescue Team Leader David “Heavy” Whalley will describe his wilderness rescue adventures around the globe in Lockerbie to Everest: My 35 years in mountain rescue.

April 29 – Mitchell Thomashow
Unity College President Mitchell Thomashow will close this year’s Lapping Lecture Series with Why We Must all Learn How to Conserve: the current mega-extinction and the future of life on earth.

    The Lapping Lecture Series is named in honor of former Interim President of Unity College Mark Lapping.
