Award Winning German Band CARA to Perform at the Unity College Centre for the Performing Arts on March 11

Award winning German band Cara will perform at the Unity College Centre for the Performing Arts on Thursday, March 11. This band is Germany’s top rated traditional Irish band.

Curtain is at 7:30 p.m. and there will be a pre-show jam at 6:15 p.m. at all three venues.  Audience members are encouraged to bring their instruments and jam with the artists for a few minutes.

When you look at the mass of talented musicians coming out of Ireland these days and all the young and energetic bands trying to get to where bands as Lúnasa, Altan, Dervish, Beoga or Gráda already are, you might well ask, why a German band should even try to go professional and tour the world with their own interpretation of Celtic Music. Surely this is not going to work out! That's what the members of CARA heard over and over again when they started.

But their debut CD "In Colour" was a massive success, and festivals and venues all around Europe booked the band. In 2006 they woke interest and got signed by one of the best booking agencies in the US, Real Good Music (RGM), the second CD "In Between Times" won them a nomination for the German Critics Award, a nomination for CD of the year by "Folker" Magazine and they were voted as one of the 10 most influential bands of the last decade by "Folkworld" Magazine. Since then, they've gotten 3 successful tours through the United States under their belts, sharing the big American stages with the top-bands of the genre.

A live concert DVD and CD was released in spring 2008, with extensive extras like interviews and on-the-road footage as a thank you to the ever growing fan base all around the world. Cara have gone a long way since they started out in 2003 and set a milestone in the history of folk bands from Germany - and they never looked back.

Cara is a quintet and plays a well-balanced mix of songs and tunes, of traditional and newly composed material, most of which is written by the band members themselves.

The two female lead singers are surely a hallmark of the band, but the quality standard for instrumentals and arrangements is equally high. Cara combines their mastery of vocals, piano, fiddle, flute, guitar, bodhrán, uilleann pipes, accordion and concertina with a dry-witted and very entertaining stage presence.
