Unity to celebrate "green" graduation May 07, 2008 UNITY—Unity College is calling Saturday’s graduation the greenest in the college’s 43-year history. With 128 students expected to receive two- and four-year degrees during a ceremony that begins at 1 p.m. in the gymnasium, it is the largest graduating class in school history. The environmental college will celebrate by hosting what it is calling its most environmentally-friendly graduation to date. At the senior banquet, scheduled for Friday, approximately 60 percent of the food served will be provided by local producers and growers who use sustainable practices, in addition to a host of other eco-minded practices, said college spokesman Mark Tardif. Tedd Benson, author and owner of Bensonwood Homes in New Hampshire, will be the guest speaker. Bensonwood, with assistance from architects at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, designed and is building the ultra efficient home that will serve as Unity College’s new president’s cabin. The home will produce more energy than it consumes. The college will award Benson an honorary doctorate in environmental studies.
