Rustic Overtones

Rustic Overtones, originally formed in 1995 in Portland, is a seven-piece band featuring guitarist and lead vocalist Dave Gutter, drummer Tony McNaboe, trombonist Dave Noyes, baritone saxophonist Jason Ward, bassist Jon Roods, alto and tenor saxophonist Ryan Zoidis and newest member Nigel Hall on keyboards and vocals.

In their own words, the band's sound is a rock/soul/funk mix of fiery rhythm section, blazing horn riffs and soulful vocals. The band split in 2002, but officially reunited during the summer of 2007, which included an appearance at the Maine Lobster Festival.

The band's new music reflects not only the band's newfound independence, but also its members' greater maturity. They always have drawn from their experiences while writing songs and it is great to be back together and do that again, said Gutter.

"But we've also become better musicians and refined our own styles of writing and performing over these past five years, and we'd all heard each other's work, which raised the bar a little for us all," he added.

Tickets are available online at unitymaine.org; at Crosstrax Restaurant, Unity; or by calling 948-7469. Also playing the Centre this weekend will be folk duo Arborea 7:30 p.m. Sunday, June 7.
