News Updates Unity College to purchase carbon offsets from state housing By Morning Sentinel Staff Report UNITY—Unity College and the Maine State Housing Authority have joined forces in a new carbon offsetting venture. The partnership, which is the first of its kind, makes the carbon offsets MaineHousing creates through its energy efficiency programs available for Unity College to purchase. Purchasing carbon offsets, a method of placing financial value on reductions in greenhouse gas emissions, has become a common method for schools, businesses and homeowners to register reduced emissions, creating a so-called smaller carbon footprint. “This is a winning situation for everyone,” said MaineHousing Director Dale McCormick. “It creates funds for more energy efficient affordable housing, it contributes to further reductions in carbon emissions and it extends the benefits of the carbon market to low-income people.” |
