Potter to speak at Waterfall Arts By Dagney C. Ernest BELFAST (Jan 15): Ben Potter, mixed media artist and associate professor of art at Unity College, will show his work and discuss the creative process Monday, Jan. 26, at Waterfall Arts Belfast, 256 High St. The talk, part of the monthly series of Artist Lectures, will begin at 7 p.m. Originally from Tennessee, Potter majored in art and biology at Williams College, where he was awarded a Mellon Grant for experimental work in the arts. He received a master of fine arts degree from the California College of Arts in 1998 and has since exhibited widely in the United States and Europe.
Potter taught classes in sculpture, design, photography, drawing and painting in Vermont and Wisconsin before coming to Unity College. His art practice stems from his interdisciplinary background and uses subjects drawn primarily from the sciences as the basis for his formal and conceptual investigations. These "investigations" may include plastic shopping bags, tin foil or motorcycle helmets. He lives in Belfast with his family. The lecture series at Waterfall Arts, now in its sixth year, features engaging and inspiring presentations by regionally and nationally recognized artists, poets, writers and art historians, followed by lively discussions. Admission is $7 at the door, free for high school and college students. For more information, call 338-2222 or visit waterfallarts.org. |
