Unity students in the lab

As many of you are aware, there is a national delay in production of the seasonal influenza vaccine as a result of the increase in production of the H1N1 influenza vaccine this year. Please note that this is a delay in production--not a shortage of vaccine. The seasonal flu vaccines will eventually be delivered, however, not as timely as we had hoped.

Our seasonal influenza vaccine clinic that was scheduled for Friday, October 16th has been postponed. As of right now we do not have a date for the rescheduled seasonal flu shot clinic. The date will be posted online once it is confirmed.

Unity College still plans to host an H1N1 influenza vaccine clinic. Different from previously posted, it appears that it may be early November. We are in the process now of ordering vaccine and arranging volunteers and nurses to deliver vaccines. We will be following Federal CDC and Maine CDC guidelines. These guidelines include priority groups--groups of folks at highest risk who will be offered the vaccines at the earliest possible date. Those priority groups are as follows:

  • Pregnant women
  • Persons who live with or provide care for infants aged<6months (e.g. parents, siblings, and daycare providers)
  • Children and young adults aged 6 months through 24 years
  • Persons aged 25 through 64 who have medical conditions** that put them at higher risk for influenza-related complications, and
  • Health care and emergency medical services personnel

(**Medical conditions that confer a higher risk for influenza-related complications include chronic pulmonary (including asthma), cardiovascular (except hypertension), renal, hepatic, cognitive, neurologic/neuromuscular, hematologic, or metabolic disorders (including diabetes mellitus) and immunosuppression (including immunosuppression caused by medications or by human immunodeficiency virus.)
