Unity students in the lab

Current Situation

As of today, Friday, December 11th, we do not have any known cases of H1N1 on our campus.

We have received both nasal and injectible vaccine and will be offering clinics early next week. See the vaccine page for more information.

The Unity College Pandemic Flu Committee continues to work closely with state and federal officials to outline steps regarding educating the college community about the flu, preventing the spread of the illness, managing those who become ill, all while continuing to deliver education to our dedicated students.

Campus Protocol

Our concern is for the health and safety of the students, and one of our goals is minimizing the spread of the H1N1 influenza among our high risk population of college students. One way we are trying to minimize the spread of illness is by isolating students who have influenza-like symptoms (fever of 100.0F or greater and a cough or sore throat). Currently our "flu protocol" includes the following:

  • Students with influenza stay in their rooms and avoid class and other crowded areas (e.g. cafeteria, student center, sports events, class trips, etc.)
  • The Registrar notifies the ill student's professors and that student is excused from all classes until he or she is well.
  • Students on the meal plan will have their meals delivered to them.
  • Temporary alternative housing is arranged for the roommate of the ill student, provided he or she is not exhibiting flu-like symptoms
  • Students who live within 250 miles of campus are encouraged to return home to recuperate, but only if a family member or friend is able to provide transportation for them.
  • Students return to campus and classes when the fever has been normal for 24 hours without the use of fever-reducing medications.

What can you do to prevent illness and stay healthy?

  • Cover your nose and mouth with a tissue when you cough or sneeze.  Throw the tissue in the trash after you use it and wash your hands.
  • Wash your hands often with soap and water, especially after coughing or sneezing.  Alcohol-based hand sanitizers also are effective.
  • Avoid spreading viruses by not touching your eyes, nose or mouth.
  • Try to avoid close contact with sick people.
