| Think Sustainably | Work Sustainably | Live Sustainably |
| Check out our story, where we’ve been, where we are, and where we want to go. Or see the live discussion on Unity College sustainability at our Unity College Sustainability Monitor. | Whether our hands are covered in dirt from weeding our community garden or we are crunching numbers about replacing a heating boiler in one of our buildings, we always have our sleeves rolled up. | It’s a state of mind. Part of our culture. Some of us bike to college, some of us build sustainable homes, and some of us are addicted to reducing, reusing, and recycling. |
Sustainability at Unity College We take sustainability seriously, as it’s built into our mission as a college. We not only teach all our students to be stewards of the environment through the environmental stewardship curriculum, but we teach them the analytical tools they need to think critically about the multiple viewpoints surrounding the complicated environmental challenges of our time. We are committed to being a sustainable campus. From our custodians cleaning green, to our students retrofitting cars to run on used grease from the cafeteria, we walk the talk. In 2007, our President, Mitch Thomashow, signed the ACUPCC (American College and University Presidents Climate Commitment). The commitment is a pledge that we will go “carbon neutral” as soon as we can. President Thomashow has also taken a leadership role on the national stage, by serving on the steering committee of the ACUPCC. We are also one of the only colleges of our small size to have a paid, full-time sustainability coordinator working to minimize the environmental impact of our college. Why do we take sustainability so seriously? Because the climate really is changing, there is a rapid loss of biodiversity, and there are countless other environmental challenges that are now a part of our reality. We want to be prepared to face these issues as a college, and we want our students to be leaders in facing these issues. At Unity College we: Think Sustainably, Work Sustainably, and Live Sustainably. |
