About Unity College

America's Environmental College

Unity College is the first college in the nation to base its curriculum on a framework of sustainability science.

Educating the Next Generation of Environmental Professionals

Our goal at Unity College is to prepare the next generation of environmental professionals and leaders for the challenges ahead. With 16 environmentally focused majors, our liberal arts curriculum is built upon our unique framework of sustainability science, the first of its kind in the nation. Our transdisciplinary approach provides students with an exceptional education that meets the demands of an earth and an economy in crisis.

Our distinctive programs include the The Honors Program, The Undergraduate Research ProgramThe Northstar Leadership Program and The Women's Environmental Leadership Program (WE Lead).

Unity College received the highest level of accreditation from NEASC.

Future-Oriented Students and Faculty

Unity was founded in 1965— and we’ve been around long enough to know what we’re doing. But we’re still nimble and focused on the future. We inspire and support students to enact the solutions that can help renew civilization. Roughly 600 eclectic, adventuresome students study here with nearly 40 dedicated, outdoor-loving, award-winning, environmentally forward-thinking faculty members

We Are In the Middle of Everywhere

Unity sits in the middle of three climate zones giving our students unique opportunities for research.

Unity College's unique location makes environmental experiential learning easy and is a great jumping off point for outdoor activities. We are in the middle of three climate zones, providing our students with a unique location for doing original research. Outdoor summer and winter sports such as hiking, camping, skiing, hunting, and canoeing are within easy access to the College. We are also close to the North Maine Woods, Acadia National Park and Baxter State Park, which we access for study and play. Major metropolitan areas and airports, Canada, Portland, ME and Boston, MA are an easy three or four hour drive.

Our Green and Sustainable Campus

From 225 wooded acres of farmland overlooking Unity Pond in the tranquil village of Unity, Maine, we make our considerable mark on the world. Our students have access to the Unity College Center for the Performing Arts, The Quimby Library, The Field of Dreams, Unity Heritage Barn, and the newly acquired Half Moon Gardens and McKay Agricultural Research Station

Unity College was the first college in the nation to divest from fossil fuels.

Nearly 70% of Unity students live on campus, forming a close-knit and inclusive community. Our campus community offers six residence halls with comfortable double and single rooms connected by common areas. Our president resides in Unity House, the first net zero residence for a president in the nation. In Fall 2014, we will have a new 70-bed residence hall, which meets LEED silver standards.

Student housing at Unity includes TerraHaus, the first passive solar residence hall in the nation.

Student Life

Unity College offers a wide variety of social, cultural, athletic, and educational opportunities that appeal to diverse interests. We have over 30 active and unusual clubs such as bee keeping, primitive skills, sugar makers, woodsmen team and curling.

Unity College offers both varsity and intermural sports.  Our intercollegiate sports compete under the guidelines of the USCAA (United States Collegiate Athletic Association), and the YSCC (Yankee Small College Conference). Varsity teams include Women’s and Men’s Basketball, Soccer and Cross-country and Women’s Volleyball.

Within one year of graduation, 89% of alumni were employed or pursuing graduate degrees at prominent institutions.

Internships and Career Opportunties

Internships were undertaken by over 160 students in over 25 countries. And every year Unity is host to the largest Environmental Career Fair in New England. So-called “Green Careers” are among the fastest growing workforce segments.

Students also go on to pursue graduate degrees at prominent institutions around the country, and many of our alumni occupy leadership positions. Career Services works hard to help students and alumni with their career goals.

Tuition and Financial Aid

Unity College’s tuition rates are 18% below national average.

The direct cost total of tuition, fees, room and board is $35,150. Unity College offers scholarships of up to $12,000 per year and financial assistance for more than 90% of our students.
