Winter Nova

Winter Nova Orientation Program

Nova Wilderness Orientation Program: Wednesday, January 8th – Sunday, January 12th

Your Unity College adventure begins with Nova. All entering students are enrolled in the Unity Experience Course that starts with the Nova adventure-based orientation trip. Winter Nova trips run during winter break just before classes begin. Half of the participants are incoming and transfer students while the other half are students who were not able to attend the summer Nova experience.

The first day, January 8th, serves as a big group welcome on campus. All students spend the afternoon getting acquainted with their leaders and the group. On-campus students will move into their residence halls earlier in the day. Trips will depart late in the afternoon and return mid-afternoon on January 12th.

Nova trips are designed to support the transition to college life by emphasizing personal growth, building social connections, and promoting environmental stewardship. Nova also encourages new students to become full participants in both the College as well as our broader communities. Nova trips are small group adventure-based experiences led by well-trained leaders who are Unity College students themselves.

Students that cannot attend the Winter Nova program will be required to make participate in the Nova Summer 2014 trip.  Qualifications for deferment include physical limitations such as a fracture, sprain, or temporary illness; family obligations; full-time or seasonal employment.  Students who will be deferring to the Summer 2014 Nova program must contact the Director of the Outdoor Adventure Center by January 3, 2014 for a deferment application.

There are only certain and limited types of situations that qualify a student for exemption from the Nova program. These would include:

  • Physical limitations
  • Long-term illness or injury (medical release required)
  • 25 credits accepted in transfer
  • Full-time employment
  • Family obligations
  • Over the age of 24

If you have any questions please contact Jessica Steele, Director of Outdoor Adventure Center at 207-948-9293 or email jsteele@unity.edu.
