Student Intern -  Check List

 Step 1: Getting Prepared

Talk with faculty in your field, your academic advisor and past interns to develop a vision of the learning experience you would like from your internship.

Read and understand the Internship Handbook

Select a faculty sponsor and talk with her/him. Your faculty sponsor has many responsibilities, from overseeing the development of your internship to reviewing and grading your internship portfolio. Faculty Sponsor Page.  The CRC can help you find a faculty sponsor. Click here to see Faculty Sponsor List.

Sign up with the Career Resource Center and read the emails you receive.

Step 2: Develop your job search tools and apply for positions

Meet with CRC staff. We can help you develop a successful job search strategy

Work with the CRC to create your resume and cover letters. Schedule a practice interview with CRC staff

Use the CRC resources: Job Resources, Internship/Jobs Database, Where Have Interns Worked, Explore Your Career page (for your major), Career Fair.  Sign up for EJobs by Major

Step 3: Registering for your internship

Consult with your faculty sponsor before accepting your internship position. Review Is the Internship Site a Good One?

Obtain a written job description from your employer. Discuss the job description and the internship with your employer.  Worksite Supervisor Page

Draft an internship agreement following the guidelines established in the Internship Handbook; work with your faculty sponsor and the CRC staff.  Have the Writing Center review your draft for writing style and grammar

Use the Agreement Outline and Agreement Sample to guide the development of your agreement. Links to these forms are on the Internship Forms page

Make arrangements to pay for your internship at the business office with the Director of Student Accounts. The Director of Student Accounts must sign the draft internship agreement.

Step 4: Submitting the draft internship packet

Submit the following to the CRC:

I. the paper copies of the following three documents:

- your  internship agreement signed by you, your faculty sponsor, and Director of Student Accounts
-your  written job description from your employer
- your resume, AND

II.  Electronic version of the three documents (your internship agreement, job description, and resume) on computer disk or as email word attachments to crc@unity.edu

The CRC will present the agreement to the internship committee for review. If there is a need for revision, the draft will be returned to you (most agreements need revision).

Confirm arrangements to contact your faculty sponsor at regular intervals during your internship.

Step 5: Make sure your internship is approved

Make sure your internship agreement is approved by the internship committee before the work period begins. No hours may accrue toward your internship until the internship committee has approved your internship agreement. After approval by the internship committee, the CRC forwards your agreement for approval by the Vice Chair of Instruction and Advising Services and the registrar, who officially registered your internship for credit.

After arrival at your internship site, confirm that the address and telephone number on your internship agreement, for contacting you during your internship, is correct. If incorrect, provide correct information to the CRC and your faculty sponsor within one week.

Complete the work experience as described in your internship agreement.

Withdrawing from an internship is possible but specific time frames apply and a withdrawal form must be submitted. For complete information see the Withdrawing from an Internship section of Internship Handbook, or call the CRC.

Step 6: After completing the work portion of your internship

Submit your Internship Portfolio to your faculty sponsor by the specified due date.

Students completing a 3000 or 4000 level internship must also complete their public presentation before the specified due date.
