Known as America’s Environmental College, Unity College is providing leadership for higher education with its sustainability science focus for teaching and learning. Prospective students will have the opportunity to learn the range of in-demand environmental career paths available to them during Unity College’s Open House, slated for Saturday, March 1.

Registration will be held from 8:00 – 9:00 a.m. in the Tozier Gymnasium.  Unity College President Stephen Mulkey, an internationally recognized scientist and leading voice within higher education for the mitigation of global climate change, will offer a welcome address at 9:00 a.m.  Visitors will have the opportunity to participate in campus tours, attend information sessions on financial aid, career resources and internships, and learn about student life from undergraduates.  Director of Admissions Joe Saltalamachia is scheduled to offer an overview of the day at 9:15 a.m.  He will be joined by current students who will offer their perspectives.

Optional information sessions on financial aid, career resources and admissions will take place from 11:00 a.m. to 11:30 a.m.  Campus tours will take place concurrently until noontime.

A brunch will be held from 11:00 to 12 noon in Wyman Commons.  Optional demonstrations from campus clubs will take place from 11:30 p.m. to 12:30 p.m. at a campus site to be determined.

Academic demonstrations will take place at various locations across campus from 1:00 p.m. to 2:00 p.m. Demonstrations will take place in different locations across campus throughout the day.  The community fair showcases each of the 16 career friendly majors offered at Unity College.  Faculty and staff from each program will be in attendance to meet students and their families, and answer questions.

Unity College students have ample opportunities to pursue research as undergraduates.  In 2013, the College began a multi-year black bear study in central Maine.  The study is the first in the United States to directly involve college undergraduates in the trapping and tracking of bears, specifically, Maine black bears.  The Open House will feature a bear study demonstration with students who were featured in a National Public Radio story about the study.

Other demonstrations include a sustainability energy / agriculture tour of the campus.

Through its hands-on approach to learning and first in the nation sustainability science framework for teaching and learning, the leading-edge of transdisciplinary (collaborative) environmental problem solving, Unity College prepares students not only for current environmental careers, but for careers that are only now being imagined. Unity College students develop skills and experiences that employers prize, pursuing internships across the United States and internationally.  For example, Unity College students have recently pursued career track internships in Israel, Namibia, Belize, and China.

An important aspect of Open House is for prospective students to gain a glimpse into what life as a Unity College student can be for them. “Prospective students and their families who attend open house will learn firsthand what this community has to offer,” noted Saltalamachia.  “Our admissions process empowers prospective students to know whether Unity College is truly right for them.”

Nestled in the verdant farm country of mid-coast Maine, only a short drive from the coast, Unity College is ideally located for its environmental mission. Students utilize the area’s natural resources on a daily basis during classes, research, and recreational activities. The quality of the educational experience offered is embodied by the host of accolades the College has received.

Unity College was nominated as the Green University of the Year for the 2013 Climate Change Award by Responding to Climate Change (RTCC). This international award nomination recognizes Unity College for its green leadership, Unity being the only institution of higher learning from the United States to be nominated.
