Amy Darcangelo’s Autobiography

In 1993 I enrolled at the University of Wisconsin Stevens Point.  At that time I was undecided as to my career path but knew that I wanted to work in the outdoors.  My advisor suggested that I complete an internship at a zoo – from that point on I was hooked.  I have always loved animals and I loved the easy-going atmosphere that working in a zoo provided.

Following graduation I accepted a part time position at the North Eastern Wisconsin Zoo as the Volunteer/ Education Coordinator.  I really enjoyed working with the animals, volunteers, and providing educational programs.  As a result of my presentation background I was offered a position at Walt Disney’s Animal Kingdom as an animal presenter/animal keeper.

My experiences at Disney’s Animal Kingdom and opening Disney’s Animal Kingdom Lodge provided me the pleasure of working with small parrots and birds of prey to giraffe and zebra.  I trained animals for shows on-stage and for medical and husbandry purposes.  While it was a great opportunity for me I decided to follow another passion of mine, and that is to educate.

I completed a Master’s in Science Education from the University of Central Florida and taught eighth grade integrated science at Eustis Middle School. Following my first year of teaching I got married and moved with my husband, Joe, to Georgia where I taught ninth grade biology.

While in Georgia we decided the South was not for us and we needed to move back to a “four season” state.  The opportunity appeared at Unity College that made it possible for me to teach the knowledge that my work experience provided me.  What a perfect fit – and here I am.

I joined Unity College in the fall of 2006 as the Assistant Professor of Wildlife Care and Education and the Wildlife Care and Education Program Leader.  I look forward to advancing my career and the program here at Unity for many years to come.
