~Aimee Phillippi~

"Some scientists choose to be chemists, biologists, and paleontologists.  Others become historians, accountants, and mechanics.  We are all of us scientists, because science is not what we are, but what we do." -Robert A. Martin

Teaching Philosophy

I believe in getting students actively involved in the learning process.  While lectures are often the most efficient way of getting information across, they need to be reinforced with activity.  Labs, projects, and assignments are all good methods of encouraging learning.   I like activities and assignments that require students to really think.  Not all the answers are in the book!  I ask questions that require students to synthesize information and figure out an answer based on what they know from different sources.  This is often challenging for many students, but learning to think critically can sometimes be more valuable than learning the information itself.  I would rather a student give a well-reasoned and thoughtful response that is wrong than a rote answer from a book that is correct.
