Unity
College Water Supply Wells
The town of Unity does not have a municipal water
supply system, so water is supplied by wells serving individual buildings
or one or more buildings. Downtown Unity is built on a sand and gravel
aquifer, shown in tan; this aquifer was deposited by glacial meltwater
approximately 20,000 years ago, and many wells draw water from this aquifer.
Outside of the sand and gravel aquifer, wells are drilled into bedrock
to provide water. Unity College is located on a hill southwest of
town, and its water is provided by a number of bedrock wells located on
the campus. Students in the Environmental Geology class are studying
the construction and location of these wells to identify possible threats
to the campus water supply, and to reduce the risks posed by these threats.
