Marshall’s 35-year tenure at the college included research on the ecology and historical archaeology of early Euro-and Afro-American settlers in the central Maine backcountry, with emphasis on land-human interaction and landscape archaeology. Marshall earned his master’s and doctoral degrees in anthropology from Cornell University, a master of arts in folklore and ethnomusicology from Indiana University and a bachelor of arts in anthropology from the University of Pennsylvania.
