An established higher education professional with extensive experience developing online academic programs and managing their delivery has been named Director of Distance Education at Unity College.
Dr. Donavan Outten will lead the environmental college in Unity, Maine, in its first ever expansion into the creation and delivery of online academic programming that is mission driven, effective, and embodies Unity College’s first in the nation focus on Sustainability Science, the leading-edge of 21st century transdisciplinary (collaborative) environmental problem solving.
Outten will provide the leadership, planning, coordination, to ensure a successful implementation of Distance Education at Unity College. A member of the Senior Staff Team, Outten will develop a comprehensive implementation plan for online distance learning implementation, delivery and evaluation. He will report to Dr. Melik Peter Khoury, Senior Vice President for External Affairs.

Previously as Associate Vice President -- Academic Extension at Upper Iowa University, Outten was responsible for undergraduate and graduate admissions, student financial assistance, and supervised a professional staff of 75. He oversaw a budget of $19 million across 19 education centers in seven states, university-wide admissions and student aid. A member of the President’s Cabinet, Outten was actively involved in the development of extended campuses.
Outten holds a Bachelor of Science degree in Psychology from Bethune-Cookman University; a Master of Science in Human Resource Development and Administration from Barry University; and Doctorate in Educational Leadership from Nova Southeastern University.
