Jessica Steele, M.Ed., NREMT
Director of the Outdoor Adventure Center
Jes has been working in the field of Outdoor and Adventure Education over the past 25+ years. She has shared her passion for this field with children and adults all over the country and in the Middle East. She received her BA in Ecopsychology from Prescott College and a M.Ed. from Plymouth State University. For the past nine years, she has worked at Unity College as the Director of the Outdoor Adventure Center. In this position, she directs the Nova wilderness orientation program, manages the Certification and Training Center, and oversees all Outdoor Adventure Center facilities and programs. Jes also is an instructor for many organizations including the American Canoe Association, SOLO, Leave No Trace Outdoor Ethics, and American Red Cross. She is also a nationally registered EMT and holds a number of other certifications.
Adam Williams, M.S., NREMT
Assistant Director of the Outdoor Adventure Center
Raised in Maine, Adam began his work in outdoor experiential education in the Western states while attending college in California. Over the past 13 years, Adam has been fortunate to work with thousands of students over hundreds of days in remote wilderness settings in North, Central and South America. In 2016, Adam earned his M.S.in Outdoor Education from the University of New Hampshire where he worked as an adjunct instructor. Currently, Adam works as the Assistant Director of Unity College’s Outdoor Adventure Center and teaches in the Adventure Based Environmental Education Major. He is a licensed EMT in the State of Maine and a certified Wilderness First Responder which allows him to teach for Wilderness Medical Associates and to work as an American Red Cross Disaster Responder. Adam also works as a Canoe Instructor with the American Canoe Association and is a licensed Maine Sea Kayak Guide.
Chris Simmons has served as a Maine Game Warden for 30 years, a Sgt. for 24 years for the Maine Department of Inland Fisheries and Wildlife. Chris lives in mid-coast Maine with his has a wife and four daughters. Chris is the Assistant Executive Director of International Wildlife Crimestoppers. Chris is one of the liaisons between the State of Maine’s Operation game thief program and the Maine Warden Service. He has spent his career focusing on apprehending serious fish and game violators. Chris was also seen on the TV show Northwoods Law throughout the series. He is also the overseer and lead instructor of patrol techniques for the Maine Warden Service.
Devon Kane grew up on the south shore of Massachusetts. She graduated from Unity College in May of 2018 with a degree in Wildlife Biology. Devon holds a Maine Recreational Guide license and specializes in canoe trips. Her teaching experience spans across diverse populations including college students, young adults, adults, and at-risk youth. She has a vast knowledge of Maine species, navigational skills, and outdoor education. Future aspirations include owning a guiding business and working somewhere in the outdoor education field. She has completed many trainings from ACA Canoeing Level I and II, Swift Water Rescue, and a Leave No Trace Trainer course. Devon is a Wilderness First Responder, NREMT, and a Leave No Trace Master Educator.
Nicholas Terry is a true Mainer! He graduated from Unity College in May of 2018 with a degree in Adventure Based Environmental Education. Nick’s passion for giving back to the environment and service learning has guided him to work and volunteer with many organizations such as the Maine Conservation Corps, where he performed trail maintenance, constructed stone staircases and blazed new trails . He has designed and led many service programs through the Unity College Nova program. Nick has also received much of the training necessary for his pursuits through the Unity College Certifications program such as: Chainsaw, ACA Canoeing Level I and II, Swift Water Rescue, and Leave No Trace Trainer course. He is also a Wilderness First Responder and a Leave No Trace Master Educator.
