Exploring Maine by canoe or kayak is an amazing experience.

On each trip you will:

  • Paddle Maine’s most scenic lakes and rivers and camp at remote campsites
  • Explore the natural surroundings which support a diverse population of wildlife including loons, bald eagles, coyote, beaver, otter and moose
  • Learn skills such as paddling strokes, maneuvers, rescues, orienteering, weather forecasting, and boat maintenance
  • Hike Maine’s scenic trails
  • Learn skills such as stove use, cooking, management of the trail, topographical map reading, GPS navigation/compass, first aid, leadership, local ecology, and other various outdoor skills
  • Learn and practice Leave No Trace principles
  • Give back to the location by providing a service such as building bridges, maintaining trails, clearing campsites, building lean-tos and more
  • There will be time to fish on any of canoeing and kayaking trips. If you are interested in fishing, you will need to acquire a State of Maine fishing license. Summer Nova trips are offered during the four weeks leading up to the start of the fall semester. The last session is open only to those students traveling from outside of New England (the New England states include Maine, New Hampshire, Vermont, Massachusetts, Rhode Island and Connecticut). These students may also opt to apply to a trip during any week of Nova if they choose to do so.

Unity College Nova Attean Pond: Hiking and Kayaking

Travel to Attean pond located in western Maine with more than 20,000 acres to explore. We will paddle beautiful secluded lakes, ponds and streams. Attean and Sally Mountains embrace this pond on either side making this trip a breathtaking destination. We will have the opportunity to hike some backcountry trails and paddle to our remote campsites.

Nova - Unity College Namhamkanta Lake: Hiking and Canoeing

Feel the calmness of the wilderness! We will paddle to our campsite which overlooks views of the lake and neighboring mountain. There is an extensive network of hiking trails along the lakeshores and up to remote lakes and ponds. The group may even hike out to a cascading waterfall. During this trip the group will spend time paddling, swimming, and hiking. The Nahmakanta Public Lands encompass 43,000 acres of sprawling forests, crystal clear lakes, secluded ponds, and gorgeous mountain views.

Nova Unity College Maine Northwoods: Hiking and Canoeing

Travel to the remote and wild north woods of Maine. We will take a step back in history and explore some forgotten places tucked away in these woods. On this trip, we may take the opportunity to canoe, discover abandoned trains, hike into ice caves, and explore towering waterfalls.  Bring your fishing pole we may have the chance to throw a line in. The North Maine Woods Inc. is owned by various landowners who have joined together to share their resources. This lands spans more than 3.5 million acres.
