Unity College President, Dr. Melik Peter Khoury, is an education entrepreneur whose blend of industry-disrupting vision, strategic financial planning, and managerial expertise has fostered sustainable growth in higher education for over sixteen years. Dr. Khoury’s previous roles include senior roles in strategy, innovation, academics, enrollment, finances, development and marketing. Institutional beneficiaries have included Paul Smith’s College, Culver Stockton College, Upper Iowa University, and Unity College. Melik Peter Khoury began his higher education career at the University of Maine at Fort Kent. Prior to joining the world of academia, Dr. Khoury was an international business executive, serving as Director of Euro-Gambian Trading (E.G.T.) He received a Doctorate in Business Administration from the University of Phoenix, a Master of Business Administration from the University of Maine, and his Baccalaureate from University of Maine Fort Kent.
During his succession from Sr. Vice President for External Affairs, to Executive Vice President, then Chief Academic Officer of Unity College, Dr. Khoury was the primary architect of significant institutional gains including three consecutive years of record enrollments, over twenty percent enrollment growth, while maintaining student preparedness standards. A 35% increase in the annual operating budget afforded Unity the financial position to realize its claim as America’s Environmental College. As EVP and CFO, Khoury helped leverage Unity’s standing as a national leader in environmental education by capitalizing on the divestment of Unity College’s financial portfolio from fossil fuels—the industry’s first such divestment. After divestment, Unity College outperformed the endowment benchmark and achieved a three-year annualized return on investments of 12.57%. Standard for the period was 10.83%. Dr. Khoury created the operational framework and helped secure approvals from the State of Maine and NEASC to launch online programs at Unity College during the 2016-17 Academic Year. Dr. Khoury recorded the second highest solicited gift in the college’s 50-year history and has increased the annual fund by 300%. Dr. Khoury completed financing, design, and on time delivery of two $4.4 million fossil fuel free 70-bed Suite Style Residence Halls, and a $1.1 million Cafeteria expansion and renovation for fall 2014. A $6 million expansion project will be complete for fall 2016 and will include a 72 bed first-year residence hall and new academic spaces with two new classrooms, two classroom conversions, and the dedication of a new student success center.
Previously, as Senior Vice President for Strategic Positioning: Chief Strategic Enrollment & Marketing Officer at Upper Iowa University in Fayette, Dr. Khoury partnered with institutional leaders to prepare a successful case study and secured the University’s first-ever Fitch bond rating of BBB+ which resulted in the successful sale of $70 million in bonds. He assisted the President in implementing the University’s aggressive $3 million economic development plan, which generated over $1 million in new retail sales in Fayette and created over 50 new jobs for students and residents of northeast Iowa. Khoury integrated Upper Iowa University’s diverse off-campus historically siloed educational programs (U.S. and international education centers, online, and independent study program) into a comprehensive multichannel $3.8 million marketing and enrollment campaign that focused on diverse market segments and overall brand image.
At Culver Stockton College, Dr. Khoury served as Vice President for Enrollment Management and College Marketing. He created a new branding and marketing campaign based on a complete overhaul of the College’s curriculum and calendar, which resulted in expanding the footprint nationally and internationally by 25%, increased the academic profile overall (average ACT and GPA scores), minority student retention (16%), and net revenue per student. While responsible for marketing at Culver Stockton, the school advanced 18 positions in the US News & World Report list of Best Baccalaureate Colleges in the Midwest. In concert with the Advancement Office, the college raised $2.6 million in private donations, representing a 20% total increase from the previous year and the largest sum the college had received in over five years. Khoury used research and data analysis to determine price point to maximize the college’s financial aid leverage, resulting in over $6 million of cumulative additional revenue.
Dr. Khoury’s prior experience includes serving as Vice President for Enrollment Management at Paul Smith’s College in NY. At the University of Maine at Fort Kent, he served in progressively responsible positions and served concurrently as coach, faculty member and in admissions. He was also Resident Director at The University of Maine at Orono and Enrollment Management Liaison at UMFK. Before joining the world of academia, Dr. Khoury was an international business executive, serving as Director of Euro-Gambian Trading (E.G.T.). Based in West Africa, he gained experience trading with 13 nations.
