The Leonard R. Craig Gallery at Unity College presents “Barbara Peabody: On the Water and in the Woods,” a show of paintings on display from Feb. 18 to April 1.

An opening reception for the artist will be held 5 to 7 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 18. Refreshments will be provided. The reception is free and open to the public.

The paintings in this series are the result of a keen interest and observation of our natural environment. Whether kayaking on a lake, or catching a glimpse of wildlife in the backyard, Peabody is constantly reminded of the need to preserve and protect habitat for our wildlife, according to Unity College Center for Performing Arts Curator and Professor of Art Ben Potter.

“Most of these paintings are small ‘color studies’ which often result in larger, more refined works,” Potter said. “Every subtle detail is acutely observed and considered as the painting evolves. Light and how it plays on surfaces are important considerations in her work.”

The Leonard R. Craig Gallery is located inside the Unity College Center for the Performing Arts, 42 Depot St., off U.S. Route 202, in Unity; and is open Monday through Friday, 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. and by appointment.
